Woods, one of the CIAA's top three-point shooters, scored five consecutive points to erase a four-point deficit in the second half. A three-pointer after his steal with 4:19 left gave the Falcons a 54-53 lead they never relinquished.
“Percy was big for us,” St. Aug Head Coach Lonnie Blow, Jr. said. “He got us going. Percy made big shots, got a steal and dove on the floor for a loose ball which led to two points.”
Woods scored the last field goal for the Falcons in the closing minutes. The Falcons made 11 of 14 free throws down the stretch to put the game away. Woods put the finishing touches on the victory with two free throws for a 64-54 lead with 22 seconds left.
In the first half, the Falcons shot 54 percent to build a 37-31 halftime lead. Johnson paced the Falcons with nine first-half points and Woods added eight points.
The Falcons cooled off in the second half which allowed the Panthers to rally. A 10-point lead by the Falcons turned into 53-49 deficit with 5:30 remaining in the contest. That's when the Falcons began their game-winning run. Woods started an 11-0 run for the Falcons which pushed them out front 60-53 with 1:34 remaining in the game.
“We played well in spurts,” Blow said. “We started off good and let them back in it. We did a good job of being resilient and being able to re-take the lead. We didn't panic once they got the lead from us. We worked harder, got a few more stops and were able to string baskets together.”
The Falcons begin play in the Southern Division on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013. They host nationally-ranked Winston-Salem State University at Emery Gymnasium at 4 p.m. It will be the fourth of five consecutive home games for the Falcons.
