City of Raleigh Museum To Display Coach George Williams Exhibit Throughout August Starting Friday (Aug. 5)

RALEIGH, N.C. – The City of Raleigh Museum will be the home of the George "Pup" Williams Exhibit this month.

 

The grand opening of the exhibit is Friday, Aug. 5, 2016, at the museum on 220 Fayetteville Street (the historic Briggs Hardware Building). The public is encouraged to view the exhibit from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. as part of the First Friday gallery walk. First Friday is a free self-guided tour of downtown Raleigh's cultural hot spots every first Friday of the month. Free refreshments will be served Friday.

 

The "Legend In Gold" exhibit honors the legendary athletic director and track and field coach, who has won 38 NCAA Division II national championships at Saint Augustine's University. It is the most NCAA track and field championships of any college coach, regardless of division. Coach Williams was also the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Coach and has coached over 40 Olympians.

 

The exhibit will be displayed in the main area of the museum., and the museum's daily business hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The museum is closed each Monday.

 

"This is a wonderful chance for us to show one of Raleigh's greatest sportsmen," said Ernest Dollar, the City of Raleigh Museum director. "This shows the university's contribution to the country's Olympic team."

 

The public can learn the history of Williams' marvelous 40-year coaching career through photos and news articles at the museum. The exhibit also features his Olympic jackets, NCAA championship trophies and Hall of Fame memorabilia.

 

"We have a hidden gem at the university that we want to showcase to the public," said Saint Augustine's University historian Frederick Sills, Jr., who spearheaded the project to create the exhibit.

 

The exhibit will be displayed through the month of August to coincide with the Rio Olympics. The Summer Games will be held Aug. 5-21. Coach Williams is sending three hurdlers and one sprinter to Rio.
