Five Saint Augustine's University football players received All-CIAA recognition on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, with
Tyron Laughinghouse (Sr./Greenville, N.C.) leading the way. Laughinghouse was named the conference special teams player of the year in addition to making the first team as a wide receiver and kick returner and the second team as a punt returner. The All-CIAA teams and players of the year were selected by the league coaches and sports information directors.
Three Falcons joined Laughinghouse on the first team including defensive end
Javarous Faulk (Jr./Macon, Ga.), linebacker
Chaz Robinson (Jr./Hampton, Va.) and offensive tackle
Stedman Gardner (Sr./Gastonia, N.C.). Center
Rory Nixon (Sr./Hampton, Va.) was named to the second team.
The players of the year and All-CIAA first team members will be honored at the CIAA Football Championship Luncheon on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at the Raleigh Marriott Crabtree Valley. The event begins at noon and is by invitation only.
Laughinghouse is the first Falcon in school history to win CIAA special teams player of the year. He is the fifth player from St. Aug to win one of the league's top individual football awards.
Laughinghouse was tabbed one of three CIAA players to watch by one website in the preseason, and he did not disappoint. At 6-foot-3 and 175 pounds, Laughinghouse either outleaped or blazed past defenders for 16 touchdowns which lead the conference.
One of the most dynamic players in the nation, Laughinghouse is the NCAA Division II leader in kick return average (40.1 yards per return) and kick return touchdowns (3). He was one touchdown away from tying the Division II record in touchdowns on kick returns. A five-time CIAA player of the week, Laughinghouse leads the conference in points (96), and his 12 touchdown receptions tie the league lead. He ranks 12
th in Division II and second in the conference in punt return average (15.33 yards per return). He returned one punt return for a touchdown this season.
His 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Elizabeth City State in the Viking Down East Football Classic on Sept. 29 was the longest in the CIAA this season. He also returned a 77-yard punt return for a score in the same game against the Vikings which was the second longest in the league this season.
Laughinghouse is one of two St. Aug players ranked first in a Division II category. Faulk, who is hearing impaired, tops the nation in sack average (1.30 per game) and leads the CIAA in total sacks (13). He had at least one sack in eight games.
Robinson led the conference in total tackles the first nine weeks until an injury forced him to miss the second half against Shaw this past weekend. He still finished second in the league with 98 tackles. Gardner and Nixon anchored an offensive line that led the league in fewest sacks allowed (1.4 per game).
